Under what conditions is the Rajya Sabha adjourned due to a death?

The House is adjourned for the day in the following cases:

  • Death of a sitting member, if the death occurred in Delhi

  • Death of a Minister (not a Rajya Sabha member), if the death occurred in Delhi

  • Death of the head of a national political party, if:
    a) they were a sitting Lok Sabha member
    b) their party is recognized in Rajya Sabha
    c) death occurred in Delhi

  • Death of an outstanding national leader or foreign dignitary, subject to the Chairman’s decision in consultation with the Leader of the House.
