Modified on Tue, 15 Apr at 7:44 AM

As per the original Fourth Schedule in the Constitution adopted on 26th November 1949, the Rajya Sabha was to have 217 members, including:

  • 12 nominated by the President

  • 205 elected representatives of States (classified into Part A, B, and C States)

The seat allocation was based on population, using the formula:

One seat per million for the first five million population, and one seat for every additional two million (or part thereof exceeding one million).
