How has the composition of the Rajya Sabha changed since 1952?

Modified on Tue, 15 Apr at 7:49 AM

The composition of the Rajya Sabha has changed multiple times due to the reorganisation of States and creation of new ones. For example:

  • 1956: Major increase to 220 seats due to the States Reorganisation Act and related laws.

  • 1960–1987: Additional seats were allocated due to the creation of new States/Union Territories such as Nagaland, Goa, Haryana, Meghalaya, etc.

  • Present: The current strength is 245 (233 elected + 12 nominated).

The Fourth Schedule to the Constitution is periodically updated to reflect these changes.
